Dollar General Corporation is the largest discount retailer with 8,346 stores in 35 states in the United States as of October 31, 2008. The stores are primarily located in the southern and eastern US, the Midwest, and the Southwest. The companies products are divided into four segments: highly consumable, seasonal, home products, and basic clothing. The highly consumables include food items, candy, drinks, cleaning supplies, health and beauty aids, automotive supplies. The seasonal items include holiday products and lawn and garden items. The home products include housewares and home decor. The basic clothing segment includes T-shirts, underwear, sleepwear, shoes, hats, and other apparel. Other products include toys and games, electronics, DVDs, CDs, and books, baby care, and pet care. The company for the year 2008 had spent approximately $136 million in construction related expenses, $15 million being in new stores and $121 million in improvements, upgrades, remodels, or relocations of their existing stores. The company had opened 175 new stores and remodeled or relocated 356 stores for the 2008 period ending October 31, 2008. The company was taken private on July 7, 2007 from an investment group consisting of afilliates of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P., GS Capital Partners(an affiliate of Goldman Sachs), Citi Private Equity and other co-investors in the amount of $7.3 billion.
