Publix Super Markets, Inc. is primarily a private operator of supermarkets in the Southeast region of the United States. The company is the largest employee owned supermarket chain in the United States through its company stock offerings. The merchandise Publix Super Markets, Inc. sells are grocery, dairy, produce, deli, bakery, meat, seafood, housewares and health and beauty items. Publix manufactures some of its food products such as bakery, dairy, and fresh foods through their five manufacturing facilities in Florida and Georgia. Most of the supermarkets also have a pharmacy service inside the store and some operates banks. As of September 27, 2008, the Company operated a total of 952 supermarkets, mostly in Florida but also have locations in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee. Further, the company operated five Pix convenience stores, 42 liquor stores, and 41 Crispers restaurants, a "quick serve" restaurant of gourmet salads, stacked sandwiches, and soups, all locations in Florida except for one convenience store in Tennessee. On September 8, 2008, Publix acquired the assets of 49 supermarket locations in Florida from Albertson's LLC for around $500 million. So far for the nine months in the company's 2008 fiscal year, the company opened 37 new supermarkets and remodeled 63 other supermarkets. Publix Super Markets, Inc. projected capital expenditures for 2008 are expected to be around $1.2 billion.
